Defending Fair Representation & Voting Rights in Louisiana

May 28, 2026

The Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans reaffirms our commitment to voting rights, fair representation, and the principle that all Louisianians deserve the opportunity to meaningfully participate in the political process.

As we stated in our 2024 resolution on voting rights and voter suppression, the Jewish community’s commitment to democracy is rooted both in Jewish values and in our historical experience as a minority community. Jewish leaders and organizations stood alongside African American leaders and communities during the Civil Rights Movement and the fight to pass the Voting Rights Act of 1965 because we understood the dangers of allowing political systems to silence, disenfranchise, and marginalize entire communities.

We are deeply concerned by recent developments surrounding the Callais decision and the efforts now underway to reshape Louisiana’s congressional maps in ways that risk excluding communities from full and fair participation in the democratic process.

Representative government functions best when elected bodies genuinely reflect the communities they serve, not when political processes are used to dimmish voices and exclude communities from meaningful representation. The Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater New Orleans stands in solidarity with communities across Louisiana fighting to protect fair representation, voting rights, and the integrity of our democracy. This moment demands the same moral clarity, solidarity, and willingness to speak out that defined the Jewish community’s role in the Civil Rights Movement.

ABOUT: The Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) is a standing committee of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans that serves as the Federation’s advocacy and social action arm, engaging all segments of the Greater New Orleans Jewish community and connecting with non-Jewish individuals and groups in the region to promote Jewish values.

The JCRC is made up of representatives from local Jewish organizations and members from the Jewish community at large.
