Welcoming Our Shlichim B’Madim

Shlichim B’Madim (Israeli Emissaries in Uniform)

Last month, the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans welcomed a delegation of shlichim b’madim, or Israeli Emissaries in Uniform.

Over the course of their visit, the Shlichim engaged deeply with Jewish life across the community through meaningful conversations, education, and shared experiences.

They spoke at the Lion of Judah luncheon, participated in a moderated discussion with the Katz‑Phillips Leadership Development Class, and connected directly with students at Jewish Community Day School and Slater Torah Academy through interactive learning games.

Their schedule also included a strong focus on communal and spiritual connection. The Shlichim attended Shabbat services at Chabad Metairie and Beth Israel, shared briefly, and joined members for Kiddush lunch and Brotherhood Shabbat at Gates of Prayer. They met and mingled with community members at a JCDS fundraiser at the Higgins Hotel and followed by a private, tour of the National WWII Museum with Federation staff.

Their visit had powerful moments of reflection and remembrance. They were honored to participate in the JCC’s Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut event by sharing their personal stories during the memorial and celebrating together afterward. The Shlichim also met with Jewish War Veterans to exchange stories of service and their shared experiences returning from combat.

The Shlichim concluded their visit with an after‑hours tour of the Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience and an intimate dinner presentation where they shared their stories with Federation’s Lions of Judah, Major Donors, constituent agency leaders, and the Federation executive committee.

Their visit filled us with gratitude for their service and sacrifice, as well as immense pride in our amazing Jewish family, both here and globally. We hope they’ll come visit our community again soon!
